There is this young nephew I have, who is a real outdoorsy kind and who is due to get a major present from me (it’s a deal that we made a while back but that is another story). In any case I think it is a great idea for kids to spend more time out   of doors and away from TVs, computers, X boxes and other electronic equipment. Summer is very much here and for kids there can be few things as great as spending some time in the pool chilling – it makes for fun and frolic for the entire family on a warm summer day. There are many options for portable pools even if we don’t have an actual pool in the back yard and having a portable slide for it just adds to the fun and games.

However there are many ways that you can save money on baby products; get baby freebies and take advantage of baby coupons that can translate into very substantial savings.

Keep a watch on your mail: This may be the best time to check your ‘junk’ mail. It is likely that people are mailing you coupons in those little envelopes that you routinely trash so just check to see that you aren’t missing out on any good deals. A friend is in the family way and I have been wondering what to give her as a baby shower gift. There is a bunch of ideas I had: some item of furniture for the nursery, or an infant toy, a stroller, a playpen, a baby monitor etc. if it is something more expensive I could get together with other friends to pool together and buy. Then asked her what she would like and now it is a tossup between a baby bed and a good diaper bag.

I find a lot of mothers thank the fact that they have a Moses basket or a bassinet. One mother I know carried it around till her baby was over a year old so that she could put her down for a nap anywhere. So I thought this one was really economical for $69.50. The only problem with it of course is that it is outgrown by the baby rather early, so I thought of a cot, which could be used over a longer period of time.

The festive season is the season of giving and I believe that it should be about giving not only to those whom we love and cherish but also to those who are less privileged than us. If you can make a stranger smile with your thoughtfulness then you have indeed got into the true festive spirit! You can donate money or even time to a charity or a worthy cause.

One idea that we had, and which we plan to put into practice this festive season is to buy toys at wholesale prices to distribute among foster homes and/or schools for the underprivileged. We have not got the details worked out yet, but we were thinking toys such as those available here, some outdoor game toys, some educational aids or board games etc. If you are looking for some nice children’s gifts at good discounts, you may want to take a look here as well.

Halloween is just a couple of weeks away so I thought we would do a review of what’s hot and what’s not this Halloween. Last year, the most popular Halloween Costumes for kids were Princess, Spiderman, Witch, Disney Princess, Star Wars characters, Pumpkin, Ghost and Power Ranger. I am desirous of new camera. I do not really need one; I have a perfectly adequate Canon 5 megapixel camera which takes very competent photos and even small video clips, but like I said I desire a new one. I covet all of the fancier newer models out there.

Now this Olympus 7.1 MP camera is supposed to be “Shockproof. Waterproof. Freezeproof. Crushproof.’ and is touted as “world’s most durable digital camera”! It is listed on Amazon for a mere $199 at a whopping 47% discount and I really have my beady eye on that one!

Let me tell you straight up that I am not a comic book enthusiast (though given the time, I still enjoy reading Asterix or Tin Tin comics) and don’t horde comics either, but I came across this comic book site that sells vintage comic books which told me that comics can be a very precious commodity and made me wish I was a hoarder after all. Apparently a near mint condition 1963 Spiderman can fetch you (or them, not sure how this works) some 2300 dollars! Not quite the investment I would make with my money, but to each his own, obviously.

I wanted to get my nephew his own music player for his 11^th birthday. While I am a firm iPod fan (gift from my significant other) which is my absolute favorite toy in the world, I did not want to spend so much on the gift. Nor would an expensive gift be appropriate for a boy who is essentially at a rather irresponsible age. So I thought an MP3 player would be ideal, less expensive but funky enough to please an 11 year old.

Now how much memory is enough, I found a lot of players for under $10 but those were all less than 1 GB. And I thought a 1 GB player is a minimum! Give the fellow a few hundred songs to play around with! What do young kids want in their MP3 players I thought to myself, and decided to explore all the possibilities. I think ideally it should be a style statement as well as a music player.

I have talked about a watch with a built in music player before and I think that is a cool gift for an 11 year old. This 1 GB MP3 watch I thought was very smart at $27.06.

Another novelty MP3 player that I think an 11 year old would love to flaunt in front his friends is this one: ultra cool shades with 2 GB MP3 player for just $20.48! I was almost tempted to search no further, I thought these so fit the bill for what I was looking for!
