I have had good luck booking with Orbitz and Priceline.com. Also, as you mentioned, using public transportion and eating at local deli’s help save some $$$$

You say book flights early….

but I’ve found that if you’re prepared to take the risk, booking at the last minute can actually yield significant savings.

Airlines are happy to get a little money on the sale of a ticket, rather than leave the seat empty.

These are great tips. I am just used to the custom of booking airlines two to three months before departure because they are generally cheaper that way. I did not know that airlines deliberately release cheap seats four months before departure.
