Offbeat Gift Ideas

If you are a regular reader here, you will know that I am always on the lookout for offbeat, unusual or wacky gift ideas. All at a discount of course! Now my significant other and I are celebrating an anniversary of sorts, and I certainly did not want to get him the usual wallet, tie, belt, cologne kind of gift. I fear that these lack imagination and also he does not need them (he still has a cologne that I gave him 7 years ago!).

Now one of the ideas I had was to gift him a blog. I was thinking that since this anniversary of ours is a few weeks away, I would start a blog now, and write down my thoughts about him, our relationship, about us as a couple, what he means to me and how important he is to me every day, day to day and then gift that to him, to continue it or to just read as my tribute to ‘us’. Although free in terms of money, this will cost me a lot in terms of time and effort; make no mistake it is a very valuable gift!

One of the things that my significant other enjoys the most is growing things; in fact he has a real green thumb. So I thought I would take him plant shopping, and let him indulge his nurturing instinct.

Then I discovered this site called, which has the best, most whacky and really interesting gift ideas:

Did you know that just water could run a desk top clock for you? Well check out this water powered clock that doubles as a flower vase for just 12.99.

Now this one may not be for everyone; it is a personal soundtrack shirt. This is a “wearable audio solution that features a working speaker embedded into the front of the shirt. When you push the appropriate button on the pocketable remote you get music or sound effects appropriate for any situation… everything from drum roll, to cat call whistle, to western showdown.” Interesting? Will cost you $39,99.

Seeing how gadget ruled we are, this power squid is something that a lot of guys would love! This thingie has 5 grounded adapter-ready outlets, 4 foot power cord, Yellow lighted master switch with 15-amp circuit breaker. Cool for $12.99!

Are these good ideas or what! Let me have your thoughts…..

  1. The blog idea is a good one, but I have a feeling my boyfriend would want to choose his own domain, LOL.

  2. Cool post. I really think the water clock is quite neat. It’s “green” for sure.

  3. I love coming up with unique gift ideas. When I was shopping for presents last year, I came across sites where you can purchase experiences like skydiving or hot air ballooning ( and I thought that was pretty original, and it’s an experience you can have with a friend or significant other. Let us know what you decide to get for the anniversary. Maybe you can have some guest posters on the blog about topics your significant other enjoys?

  4. Derek mentioned us both in the same blog post so I thought I’d pop in and say hello. Derek and I have been talking about gift ideas and a potential blogging contest for a gift store owned by a friend of mine.

This online store that sells all kinds of gifts that can be engraved. He started out selling Groomsmen gifts so he has a lot of that kind of thing but he has expanded into all kinds of things – so many, in fact, that I am developing a Gift Ideas blog and added the post I’ve linked in here so people can tell what he has.

He has some very unusual gifts and being able to engrave initials or a personal message is a plus in my book. One that Derek and I mentioned to each other is a custom vintage pub sign with your name or business name and whatever you’re into (fishing, golf, car racing, lots more).

I wish I had that new site up further so I can add links to MLDina’s idea and get more traffic to them. (I can add the links – just haven’t developed any major traffic from there yet.)

In the meantime, let me know if you might be interested in receiving a free gift and a gift certificate you can use yourself or to promote your blog to help promote my friend’s gift site.

And do drop by my GrowMap blog and visit me at FF and Twitter. The link is in Derek’s blog and I’m easy to find as either Internet Strategist or GrowMap wherever I travel online.

  5. Wow, a speaking T-shirt. If only we could add our own audio samples, that would have been something really interesting. Hm…
