Bill Gates: Dethroned!

It has been a while since I did my Rich, Richer, Richest post. Since then much water has flowed under the bridge and with Bill Gates stepping down from the Chairpersonship of Microsoft just recently, I thought I would do a recap of the richest.

For quite some time now, our man Bill Gates, computer whiz, philanthropist, business magnate, nice guy, chairman of Microsoft etc., had tenaciously clung to the number one spot and the ‘richest man in the world’ title. The definitive Forbes’ list tells us that not only has the king been dethroned (after 13 years no less), he has been relegated to the third spot! Ah how the mighty have fallen!

Warren Buffet - Richest MAnSo the new title bearer for the ‘richest man in the world’ is Warren Buffet, investor, businessman and philanthropist with a personal fortune of $62.0 billion. Buffet, incidentally, often plays bridge with Bill Gates; birds of a feather, it would seem, play bridge together. He is known as much for his personal frugality as for his immense wealth.

Top Grossing Films of All Time

I love watching films, and for my money I would more readily watch a pure comedy or even a romantic comedy (think movie version of Friends) rather than anything with too much blood and gore or a thriller with too many twists and turns. After a bit I get a bit dizzy and can’t keep up with all the twisty turns you see. However the economics of films interest me, even if the films themselves may not.

So when a began a quest for the top grossing films of all time, I found that only three films so far had grossed over $1 billion till date.

Titanic Kate Winslet Leonardo DiCaprioThe top grossing film of all time and in the entire world is Titanic - the tragic love story revolving around the rich girl and the poor boy unfolding against the back drop of that most ill-fated and famous of all ships. Made back in 1997, it remains the top grosser to this day with $1,848,813,795.

Home Decor (Part II)

A while back, I did a post about home decorating that seemed to be pretty popular and elicited quite a bit of comment and appreciation. So I thought that one more post on the subject would not be taken amiss, especially since I am helping out my mother with some additions/alterations to her house and am looking to do the research myself.

Velvet drapesThe color, material and texture of the cloth or upholstery that you use for your bath or bed linen and curtains is as important as the stuff we discussed earlier (lamps, rugs, decorative items etc). This site simply called the textileshop.com is a one stop shop for all your bed and bath linen requirements. Velvet window treatments here start at $8.49 (down from $16.99). Bath linen here start at under $1 for this Ravello Jaquard Bath towel. You can get a three piece embroidered bath set for $2.99.

Best Selling Discounted Comic Books

Spiderman comicsLet me tell you straight up that I am not a comic book enthusiast (though given the time, I still enjoy reading Asterix or Tin Tin comics) and don’t horde comics either, but I came across this comic book site that sells vintage comic books which told me that comics can be a very precious commodity and made me wish I was a hoarder after all. Apparently a near mint condition 1963 Spiderman can fetch you (or them, not sure how this works) some 2300 dollars! Not quite the investment I would make with my money, but to each his own, obviously.

MP3 Players at a Discount

I wanted to get my nephew his own music player for his 11th birthday. While I am a firm iPod fan (gift from my significant other) which is my absolute favorite toy in the world, I did not want to spend so much on the gift. Nor would an expensive gift be appropriate for a boy who is essentially at a rather irresponsible age. So I thought an MP3 player would be ideal, less expensive but funky enough to please an 11 year old.

Now how much memory is enough, I found a lot of players for under $10 but those were all less than 1 GB. And I thought a 1 GB player is a minimum! Give the fellow a few hundred songs to play around with! What do young kids want in their MP3 players I thought to myself, and decided to explore all the possibilities. I think ideally it should be a style statement as well as a music player.

Watch with MP3 playerI have talked about a watch with a built in music player before and I think that is a cool gift for an 11 year old. This 1 GB MP3 watch I thought was very smart at $27.06.

Sunglasses with MP3 playerAnother novelty MP3 player that I think an 11 year old would love to flaunt in front his friends is this one: ultra cool shades with 2 GB MP3 player for just $20.48! I was almost tempted to search no further, I thought these so fit the bill for what I was looking for!

Bag It!

I’ve talked about celebrity look alike items (or knock-offs if you prefer that term) before, and touched on the topic of handbags, but those among us who feel passionately about hand bags would agree that several posts and not just part of one post can be devoted to the topic of bags, bags and more bags! Since we are all about discounts or at the very least good value for money, let’s talk about designer ‘inspired’. Let’s face it, if you want a smart, current look and don’t want to do that at the expense of a second mortgage, then you have to consider this option.

Black clutch inspired by Calvin KleinStyle in the bag is a good collection of bags which has a selection of evening bags and clutches and a good designer inspired section. This classic black clutch (Calvin Klein inspired) would be great to grace any occasion with but will set you back by $19.94! [Read more →]

Fashion Industry: Who’s The Most Influential and Powerful

With the legendary YSL (Yves Saint Laurent) passing on to the great fashion runway in the sky, I got to thinking which are names that inspire awe in the world of fashion, who rules the roost and who is the most influential? That, and I finally saw the Devil Wears Prada so my interest in the fashion industry was piqued.

The Olsen TwinsWhile I could not find a definitive top ten list like the one Forbes compiles I found a pretty good compilation by Time here, which named Rose Marie Bravo, of Burberrys as number one among women in fashion, followed by Miucchia Prada and then Anna Vintour editor in chief of Vogue. The list also includes the Olsen twins whose line of ‘tween’ clothing marketed thru Walmart is a runaway success. The list also names Delphine Arnault, board member of Louis Vuitton and Donna Karan, whose label DKNY is one of the most visible and recognizable fashion names anywhere. [Read more →]

Lighting Up The House

My mom’s house needed some revamping and sprucing up. So I offered to help her out with it. We decided to start with getting a smart rug and changing some of the lamps and light fixtures. We picked up some of the ideas from my Home Decorating post. We got the rug that I featured in that post. Some good lamps and lights were next on the list. Since we needed a couple for each room, I decided to look it up deeper.

I found this site for all kinds of lighting solutions. They had an impressive collection of indoor lighting. I started looking around for what would fit perfectly into the home. Their products are well categorized making it very simple to find what you are looking for.

In line lightsSmall hand finished chandelierI thought this in-line chandelier would work well in the kitchen. I really liked this one too for its different style and concept. It would look good over the dining table I think. It has a wooden base with a glass table top. [Read more →]

Watches: Discounts and Novelties

Recently my fav wristwatch finally died on me and the strange thing is I am not really missing it because the cell phone is my watch as well as my alarm clock now. Having said that, I miss the physical presence of an attractive watch on my wrist so I decided to look up online offers for wristwatches.

Cheap watchesWatches gate is a site which has a dizzying array of really inexpensive options here, all for under $10! I was struck by this watch for under two bucks which claims to include a calculator as well! How long will that last I thought to myself, but even if it works for a couple of months, it’s still cheap at 2 bucks! And here is the irony of the cheap wristwatch: the watch itself is $2 and the shipping is $5! I have to admit, I found quite a few of the watches very tempting at those ridiculous prices!

Make Money Using Credit Cards

Did you know that using credit cards can be a good way to make money? Or at least save money if you would prefer to look at it that way. Surprised? I was too until I delved deeper into the topic. Now I am not talking about just the 0% interest credit period that you can avail of when using your credit card. There are a lot more bonuses involved.

There are Cash Back credit cards that return a fixed percentage (ranging from 1% to 5%) of your purchases amount back to you! That would in effect mean availing a discount to that tune. Now if that doesn’t want you to shop more, what does?
