DVD Player or DVR? That is the question…

As promised, this is one more in our Valentine day series. If we got some good deals on DVDs, we now need a player on which to play them, don’t we? So today let’s take a look at all the permutations and combinations available in the DVD player segment. Later we can do HD and LCD TVs and also take a look at Home Theatre systems.

Without revealing my age, I must tell you that I am of the generation that is rather conversant with the VCR (the Video Cassette Recorder, duh!). So when I looked to replacing the almost obsolete VCR, I thought to myself I still want to be able to tape TV programs so I don’t miss anything and be able to play DVDs as well. Apparently a lot of people thought like me and there is a plethora of DVD players available in the market, there are even DVD/VCR combination players available! Then there are DVD recorders with which you can copy DVDs and DVD recorders with hard drives, which you can use for ‘taping’ TV programs. Confused? I was too, still am a little confused, truth be told! It took me a lot of time to sift through all the ‘DVD deals’ on the internet, and here is what I came up with:Philips DVD Player

Let us first take a look at the simple DVD player: connect to TV, insert DVD, press play, watch movie. You can get a Philips DVD player here for as little as $36.99!

There are cheaper DVD players out there to be sure, but they are either used or of some rather forgettable (and therefore not wholly trustworthy brand). If you want a DVD player that converts to Hi-definition images as well, take a look here for prices ranging from $39 up.

Check out the various DVD/VCR combos here that are priced from $ 70 up for the Samsung model etc.

DVD REcorder AmazonAs for DVD recorders, here’s my take on the subject: We want to tape TV shows remember? So, if you have the money to spend (this is the stiffest price in the DVD player segment) get the one with the hard drive, check it out at Amazon.

If you have about $900 spare, go for this one which does all this fabulous stuff:

Digital recording opens up a whole new world of possibilities that you could only dream of before. ThePanasonic best DVD Player super fast data transfer rate enables this DVD player/recorder to play and record at the same time so you can record a live program while watching anything that was previously recorded on the same disc. With Time Slip Playback you can even view a program while you’re still recording it (beginning at any point that was already recorded). You don’t have to wait for the end of your show, to be able to watch it from the beginning”

Sigh! That’s the one I’m getting when I can afford it!

  1. I didn’t know that there are so much to learn about DVD players.

Personally, I don’t even own a TV set. I use my laptop for all purposes. :)

  2. Raymond » I’m sure that makes things so much simpler. I would do that too if things didn’t look so much better on a larger screen.
